Black Mental Health Group

MISSION STATEMENT

Akwaaba Ayeh Project exists to predominantly provide an advocacy service to people with mental health needs and their carers, mainly in the City and County of Leicestershire.

What is Advocacy?

Advocacy is a process of empowering people. It enables them to express their personal views and needs, thereby achieving their rights and entitlements.  It also assists people in securing relevant information and knowledge, enabling them to make informed choices.

The focus of Akwaaba Ayeh project is to empower black people, particularly African, African-Caribbean and Asian people with mental health problems and their carers.  The reason for this being that Akwaaba Ayeh project recognises the overrepresentation of black people within the psychiatric services.

Akwaaba Ayeh project hopes to achieve its aims by working consistently within the boundaries of its Equal Opportunities Policy.

Objectives
